We had a visitor stop by the church office while we were working on the newsletter. While there, she made a comment that between the weather and all the gloomy news going around, it has been a tough time. And those of us in the office agreed with her.
It seems that as of late, we have had bad news after bad news. On top of that, the weather has been dreary, cloudy, damp, and chilly. With this combination, it is easy to feel a bit depressed or downtrodden.

But on these days, we must remember the words from John 1:1-5:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Each of us and this world we live in were given life by Jesus Christ. He is the light of all mankind. And His light shines in the darkness.

This is hard to remember sometimes. When those around us are terribly ill…when the weather is dark and gloomy…when we start thinking about tax season…when we are waiting for the next paycheck, it’s hard to see the light through the darkness.

Yet, we can be reassured through verse 5 that the darkness has not overcome the light. The dark will not last forever. Healing will come in Christ’s name. Spring will be here in a few months. Tax season will come, and it will go. God will meet our needs from now until we get paid again. The darkness will not overcome the light of Christ.

This doesn’t mean we won’t need to look for it.

If we focus only on the negative, we allow the darkness to creep in. But when we focus on Christ, we will begin to see His light in our life. We will begin to see the little triumphs, the tiny miracles, the God-sightings in our everyday life. When we allow our attention to focus on the positives, the light will grow brighter. The darkness will begin to diminish.

So, until our loved ones are completely healed…until the sun is shining brightly through the clouds…until April 16th…until payday, have faith that the light is there. Have faith that Christ is standing beside you. Have faith that the Holy Spirit is still within you. Have faith that your God is still working all things to your good.

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Kim
